Reason # 21 – And they lived happily ever after…

Most of the main characters in a romantic comedy are usually against marriage – for many different reasons – at the beginning of the film, but they end up getting married and thinking that marriage is the answer for all problems. What is the reason modern and independent women like the ones from “Sex and the City” (updated by the success of the last two films) have no other purpose in life than grabbing a “Mr. Big”? Why do we suppose that “living happily ever after” is only possible by getting married? The answer is simple: this idea is sold to us since our childhood. Beginning with the Fairy Tales, this “truth” is spread by films and TV shows that bomb us every single day, making us believe that is the only true way to happiness. The problem is that those stories end up with “and they lived happily ever after…”, but they don’t show how! They usually end at the wedding day. They don’t show us to get through all the difficulties and problems that come after. Of course there are happy marriages, but somebody’s happiness can’t be laid upon a truth created with the purpose of selling popcorn. A lot of people – men and women – feel guilt about not being married. Even when they have a good life, they want the one they see on the big screen. Many can get what they want.
